For an opening of a given size, is diffraction more pronounced for a longer wavelength or for a shorter wavelength?
Diffraction is basically interference of light with itself which occurs when peculiar physical conditions are satisfied. The diffraction pattern has different properties than the interference pattern and both might be present at the same time. When light of wavelength λ passes through one slit of width a, the pattern for the intensity of light on a screen located at a distance L from the slit is In the approximation of small values of θ, the equation above provides the locations of the minima on the y-axis There is not a similar equation to describe the locations of the maxima. A central maximum is located at the center; the others are about halfway between two minima. The width of the central maximum is twice as much as the other maxima.

The physics of diffraction and colors of light. The wavelengths of various colors of light can vary. Violet light can have a wavelength of 400 nm and red light can have a wavelength of 700 nm. If these two colors of light pass by a very sharp edge such as a razor blade, which light will bring about the greater diffraction? If these two colors pass through an opening that is 500 nm wide, which color will show the greater diffraction? The physics of diffraction and an island in an ocean. A small island 200 m wide is in the middle of an ocean. On one day, wave crests 50 m apart approach the island. On another day, wave crests 400 m apart approach the same island. In which case will there be a greater diffraction of the waves around the island? The physics of diffraction of sound waves produced by bats. Bats can hear sounds of frequencies as high as 100,000 Hz while a human can hear a sound of frequency 10,000 Hz. Which frequency of sound would best diffract around a barrier through an opening such as a small hole in a wall? If a small insect was flying behind a tree, which sound would more likely bend around the tree and reach the insect?
