Tularemia is a zoonotic disease transmissible to humans, caused by a nonmotile, aerobic Gram-negative coccobacillus. This bacterium has a structure that discourages phagocytosis and can inhibit the fusion of phagocytic vesicles. It also produces a toxin that accounts for many of the signs and symptoms of tularemia. This disease is also known as the "black death" and is responsible for many pandemics caused by the bacillus. Inflamed lymph nodes called adenitis are a classic symptom of tularemia. Its classic symptom is the sudden appearance of painfully inflamed lymph nodes. This bacterium carries virulence plasmids that code for molecules that inject harmful proteins into the targets, preventing phagocytosis.
