We are regularly bombarded with advertisements for supplements that will help us lose that ugly fat the fast and easy way with no diet or exercise required. Your roommate insists on purchasing every new supplement that hits the market in the hopes of shedding a few pounds. As a scientifically educated person, you know that the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate these supplement companies and that their claims are typically not backed by good scientific evidence. Explain to your roommate some of the risks associated with taking these supplements (based on what you know about cellular respiration and metabolism) and what will work best to lose weight. Conduct an "initial" discussion board post by creating a Thread. The "initial" post should be around 100-150 words.

Your roommate tells you he wants to put on more muscle mass. He plans to do this by adding in strength-training exercises and protein shakes to his diet. What advice could you offer him? Select one: a. Higher amounts of protein will add muscle mass faster, so add in as much as you possibly can. b. Try to stay as low as possible in your intake as proteins have no benefit for muscle mass gain or energy usage. c. Intakes of up to 1.7 g/kg are acceptable during muscle mass gain, but going over this amount can lead to dehydration and insufficient carbohydrate intake. d. Going over 0.8 g/kg will have no benefit for muscle building during the training period.

Your friend is using a nutritional supplement that he hopes will improve his performance at martial arts. As a curious scientist you ask him why he thinks this supplement will improve is agility, stamina and speed—all essential goals of the serious martial arts student. Your friend replies that he has found the following study on a website for a distributor of this product. It has convinced him that the product is worthwhile. In this study: • Five volunteers offered to take the supplement for six weeks. • Their ability to perform a weight-lifting routine was measured at the beginning and the end of the study. • At the end of the study every participant had improved in both the amount of weight they could lift and in the number of repetitions they could do with each weight. 1. (1 pt.) What hypothesis is the experiment testing? 2. (1 pt.) What is the result in the experiment? 3. (2 pts.) List two flaws with the experiment.

It is mostly your roommate's fault. Nosy astronomers have discovered enough junk and clutter in your dorm room to constitute the missing mass required to close the Universe. After observing your floor, closet, bed, and computer files, they extrapolate to slobs in other galaxies and calculate the average density of the observable Universe as 1.20$\rho_{\mathrm{c}}$ . How many times larger will the Universe become before it begins to collapse? That is, by what factor will the distance between remote galaxies increase in the future?
