Life on Earth can be studied at many different levels of complexity. You learned about the largest of these levels (the biosphere) and the smallest (atoms) in Concepts of Biology chapter 1.1 In this writing assignment, you will explore how humans fit in to this broad stretch of scientific inquiry. A complete assignment will be 8 paragraphs long. Each paragraph must have at least two sentences. 1: Identify a population of organisms that interacts with humans. How do these organisms interact with humans, and what benefits do humans or these other organisms enjoy? 2: Look up the human organ systems (you could use Wikipedia). How many are there, and what is the organ system you've chosen? What does this organ system do? 3: What is one organ within the organ system you chose in #2? How does this organ assist with the overall function of the organ system? 4: What is one type of tissue that you think plays a major role in the organ you picked in #3? We will look into tissues in later modules, but for reference they are: epithelial tissue (linings), muscle tissue, nervous tissue (as in nerves), and connective tissue (such as bone, blood, and fat). 5: What is one type of human cell that you think is important for the function of the organ you chose in #3? You could skim this site for some ideas. 6: Which organelle (see here for reference) probably plays a role in the cell you picked for #5? What function of the organelle is important for this cell? 7: Of the following types of molecules, which do you think plays the largest role in the cell you picked? We will go into a lot more detail in later modules, so there's no wrong answer here! Give it your best guess based on a little bit of research! Your choices are: lipid (fat), protein, carbohydrate, or nucleic acid. 8: Name an atom! That's it. Just name one atom (element) from the periodic table. What do you remember about this atom from your chemistry course in high school or college?
