What are some of the ethical considerations of extending the human life span? Discuss the life extension technologies you read about this week in the notes. If they were available, would you take advantage of one of them to live another 100 years in good health?

These considerations include but are not limited to: - Resource Allocation: Extending human life could exacerbate existing issues related to the allocation of limited resources. With more people living longer, there could be increased competition for food, water, Show more…

Life Expectancy Some scientists believe there is a limit to how long humans can live. One supporting argument is that during the past century, life expectancy from age 65 has increased more slowly than life expectancy from birth, so eventually these two will be equal, at which point, according to these scientists, life expectancy should increase no further. In 1900, life expectancy at birth was 46 yr, and life expectancy at age 65 was 76 yr. In 2008, these figures had risen to 78.1 and 83.8, respectively. In both cases, the increase in life expectancy has been linear. Using these assumptions and the data given, find the maximum life expectancy for humans. Source: Science.

If we can figure out a way to increase the efficiency of telomere repair in human cells , would you expect human lifespan to increase or decrease ?

As more humans live longer, many people face degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease that (in most cases) are linked to advancing age. Assuming that some individuals may be genetically predisposed to successfully combat these conditions, is it likely that natural selection alone would act to favor such a predisposition in human populations? Why or why not?
