What is the main advantage of the present system of scientific naming for classifying organisms. A) It clarifies the distinction between an animal and a plant. B) Latin is not used for casual conversation, so it can be reserved for scientific names. C) It avoids the confusion of the same species having different common names in different places. D) If an organism has more than one name because of local customs, it can have more than one scientific name.

00:03 We have a hierarchy, a way of naming things that are in our world.
00:08 And so most things will have a scientific name.
00:12 However, because we did not always have this system, and because often these scientific names for things are very long and convoluted and difficult to say because they're in latin, we also have common names, which are names that are generated by sometimes individual populations that are encountering this animal or this plant.
00:34 So an example to show you is dandelions, the flower.
00:41 And you know they're known because at different times of their life, they might have those yellow petals or they might have those seeds that can blow away in the wind, right? we call them dandelions.
00:53 That is its common name.
00:55 However, if you wanted to know its scientific name, which is the latin name based on its family, its genus, its species, it would be pteraxicum is the genus name.
01:12 And then if you were talking about a specific type of dandelion, it would have a species name.
01:17 And so an example of that would be a fischionelle.
01:21 There's multiple different species of dandelions.
01:23 This is just one.
01:27 And so you can see that the common name and the scientific name are very, very different.
01:30 And so what are the issues and benefits that we gain from these two different ways of naming things? well, the scientific way of naming things is very useful, very important, because it gives us a universal name for animals and plants and objects.
01:53 It can be used everywhere because it's latin.
01:57 It's not specific to english or spanish or french or italian.
02:00 It is universal with this scientific language of latin.
02:06 It is very precise because if you know the scientific name, normally it's just genus and species like i've listed here.
02:16 But you can have the full scientific name, which tells you its domain, its family, its category, everything.
02:24 I give you all of the distinctions, every category that you could put it in, it will tell you that with the full scientific name.
02:33 So it's extremely precise.
02:35 It's also very consistent.
02:41 There are very, very few changes to our scientific naming.
02:46 Unless all the scientists agree that we should move one or a few different species into a new category, or we've created a new category for these species we're finding, they don't move.
03:03 So their scientific name is permanent...
