Let's talk about the milgram experiment or the milgram study.
00:12
Why was this so pivotal? well, let's talk about the study itself, right? so you had people come in.
00:20
This was right after nazi germany, and they were really, really questioning why obedience in nazi germany was so strong.
00:32
How come so many people did so many bad things? so this is kind of framing why they were asking these questions.
00:38
So in this study, you had this person who was supposed to be the learner, and then you have this other person who was supposed to be helping in the learning, and this person was the enforcer.
00:57
You also had a scientist here that was telling the enforcer how to do their job.
01:06
Well, what we know about this now is that this learner over here is called a confederate, which meant that they were actually a scientist in on the study or an actor that was hired by the scientists.
01:23
This scientist over here was also a confederate.
01:29
This person, however, was a real participant.
01:33
They did not know what was going on.
01:40
Within this study, the idea was, is that there was a wall between the enforcer and the learner, and that the learner's job was to memorize as many things as possible.
01:50
And the enforcer's job was to help them learn how to memorize things by giving them a small shock anytime that they got the answer wrong.
02:00
So this was the basis of the study, right? basically, along the way, what happened was the learner, who was the confederate, so they were in on it, they would purposely get more and more things wrong.
02:15
And the participant was supposed to be shocking this person with more and more voltage.
02:26
There was a certain mark on the voltage that basically said, don't shock people past this because it's dangerous and it will kill them.
02:39
So every time the person got a mistake, they had to use a little bit more.
02:44
At a certain point, the participant was required to shock the person past this recommended line.
02:55
And if they showed any signs of being uncomfortable with it, this confederate over here said, do it.
03:02
I'll take all the responsibility...
