Details of the Respiratory System You have previously located several of the major structures of the respiratory system in the neck region of the pig (Exercise 8.1). Now, complete the study of the respiratory system. Procedure: 1. Identify the trachea (Figure 8.10A) and the larynx. Follow the trachea caudally to the pleural cavities housing the lungs. 2. The trachea branches into bronchi (singular, bronchus), which are responsible for pushing air into the tubes of the lungs. Be careful not to damage the blood vessels while observing this. 3. Tease apart the lung tissues to observe that the larger bronchi branch into bronchioles. As the tubes become smaller in diameter (about 2 mm), they are called bronchioles. 4. Bronchioles continue to branch and ultimately lead to microscopic alveoli, which are thin-walled, blind-ending sacs covered with capillaries (Figure 8.10b). This is where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place between the blood and the atmosphere. 5. Identify the epithelial lining of the pleural cavity. How would this epithelium be named? 6. What is the name of the epithelial lining adhering to the lung surface? After you complete this lab topic, return your pig to its plastic bag.
