3. What are the modes of action of antibiotics that you have used in this experiment? You may consult your instructor or use textbook for information. 4. Do a little research on how bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics and write a short description how your assigned bacterium could develop resistance to the antibiotics that you have used in this experiment.

Design an experiment to determine which antibiotic will be most effective in killing a particular culture of bacteria. You should consider independent, dependent and control variables, the materials you will need, and what types of observations you would record.

1) Compare and contrast the different mechanisms of action for the antibiotics. How are they the same? How are they different? 2) Is susceptibility testing an important part of treatment? Explain. 3) Briefly discuss the classes of antimicrobials. Define each type and provide a basic detail about the class. 4) Discuss a situation in which it is best to use a broad-spectrum antibiotic instead of a narrow-spectrum one.

Arrange the steps in the evolution of antibiotic resistance in order, starting when a virulent bacterium invades a host. Virulent bacteria invade host. Antibiotic resistance is widespread. Answer Bank Resistance alleles move to virulent bacterial species that lack antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistant alleles move to other, sometimes non-virulent, bacterial lineages or species. The host consumes antibiotic medication. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria multiply in the host. Most bacteria that lack antibiotic resistance die, but bacteria with antibiotic resistance live.
