Monomeric Vs multimeric proteins The globin protein myoglobin functions as a monomer, while for the related protein hemoglobin, the functional form is an α2β2 heterotetramer. With the α and β subunits of hemoglobin showing remarkable similarity to myoglobin in terms of their general structure. With the exception of some positions that are occupied by hydrophilic amino acid residues in myoglobin, while in hemoglobin subunits, they are occupied by hydrophobic amino acid residues. ==> What might be the relevance of these differences, and where in the tertiary structure of the concerned proteins would you expect them to reside?
