Fertilized eggs are more likely to implant in the uterine tubes that are inflamed because of the extensive blood supply. Inflammation resulting from PID can accelerate the development of the fertilized eggs so that it is able to implant sooner before reaching the uterus. PID is also a risk factor for ectopic pregnancies, in which a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. Explain the connection between PID and ectopic pregnancies.
