Why are stereomicroscopes often referred to as dissecting microscopes? Stereomicroscopes come apart (dissect) easily. The large distance between the lens and the specimen makes them ideal for dissections. They are good for viewing much smaller objects. Only a few specimens will fit under the stereomicroscope. The two eyepiece lenses on a stereomicroscope give a better perception of depth.
The eyes of some animals point in the same direction as do those of humans, but in other animals (such as birds) the eyes are positioned more laterally so they point in different directions. What would be the selective advantages of these different anatomical arrangements, and what kinds of animals would you expect to have one or the other?
