When the enzyme RNA polymerase recognizes and connects with the control segment in DNA to be transcribed, the process of transcription begins. The mRNA is assembled as the RNA polymerase moves down the DNA segment adding complementary nucleotides one by one to the growing RNA strand. Transcription ends when the RNA polymerase reaches a termination sequence and the new mRNA strand and RNA strands are released.

Transcription is the synthesis of a strand of RNA complementary to a DNA template. The processes of transcription can be subdivided into the stages of initiation, elongation, and termination. Initiation of transcription is dependent on an upstream (5') DNA region, that represents the initial binding site for RNA polymerase. The process of creating the initial transcript during transcription is more complex in eukaryotes than in prokaryotes, including the addition of a 5'7-mG cap and a 3'poly-A tail, to the pre-mRNA.

During termination, a sequence is reached that causes RNA polymerase and the RNA transcript to dissociate from the DNA. During initiation, transcription factors bind to the gene promoter followed by RNA polymerase. During elongation, RNA polymerase slides along the DNA in an open complex to synthesize RNA.

During replication, the DNA is constructed in segments called Okazaki fragments. The production of RNA is referred to as transcription. The tRNA codon binds to an mRNA codon. When the primary RNA transcript is edited, the introns are removed. DNA polymerase begins each new nucleic acid strand during DNA replication. The process where the ribosome assembles a polypeptide chain according to the instructions on an mRNA is called translation.
