What happens when an action potential reaches the axon terminal of a neuron? Voltage-gated Ca2+ channels open. Neurotransmitter is packaged into synaptic vesicles. Neurotransmitter binds to ligand-gated channels on the postsynaptic membrane. Electrical signal of the action potential passes to the postsynaptic cell through gap junctions. The synaptic terminals fuse with the presynaptic membrane.
