In February of 2018, a lone male wolf joins an established pack of 12 wolves in the Lamar Valley. He fights another male in the pack for dominance and wins the role of alpha male. He mates with the alpha female in the pack, and they have a litter of five pups in April. The male that lost the battle stays at a distance from the pack but eventually runs off in July to join a new pack. A single wolf pup from the leader's brood dies from malnutrition due to a cleft palate (deformity in the roof of the mouth) in August. An older wolf in the pack also dies after being caught in a bison stampede that was triggered by a coordinated hunt in late September. The pack begins to stock up for the cold season in early October, hunting frequently to prepare for the scarcity of food that comes with the harsh Yellowstone winter. The pack admits two more young males into the group just before the heavy snowfall in late October, allowing them to mate with the younger females, brooding 9 more pups the next April and increasing the diversity of the gene pool within the pack.

You have just completed a study of wolves in Alaska. The Alaska Department of Fish and Wildlife wants you to report survivorship of this population. Which of the following statistics should you report to fulfill their wishes? Group of answer choices 85% of 2-year-old wolves lived to the age of 3. 60% of wolves died of natural causes, whereas 40% were shot by hunters. 35% of wolf pups born lived to the age of 6. 100% of wolves that were 12 years old died by the time they turned 13 (i.e., max lifespan = 13). All of the above qualify as estimates of survivorship.

The figure above shows dynamics of wolves and moose on Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. Look carefully at the events marked on this graph. In particular, note that in 1997 a wolf called "the Old Grey Guy" migrated to the island. (He is shown in lecture 1.3 on page 3.) He died in 2006. When he arrived, the island had about 20 wolves. When he died, the population had grown to nearly 30. Immediately after his death, the wolf population crashed, eventually going extinct in 2018. Suggest a hypothesis based on the concepts in this lecture to explain why the Isle Royale wolf population grew after the Old Grey Guy arrived and why it crashed after he died.
