Which of the following best describes the gastroilial reflex? as the stomach fills, material within the last part of the small intestine is moved into the ascending colon as the stomach fills, strong peristaltic waves move contents of the colon into the rectum as material moves through the ileocecal sphincter, stomach secretions are inhibited stretch of the rectal walls triggers automatic defecation in infants

Which of the following occurs as chyme moves into the small intestine to help slow down the process and allow time for thorough digestion and absorption? None of the choices is correct Fats in the small intestine trigger somatostatin production, which inhibits gastric juice production All of the choices are correct Cholecystokinin is produced in response to proteins and fats entering the small intestine, which decreases gastric motility Food moving into the small intestine triggers a sympathetic nerve reflex that inhibits gastric juice production

Which of the following statements are true of the large intestine? (Read carefully and select all of the correct statements.) A. The appendix is a small, dead-end extension of the ascending colon. B. An important function of the colon is the absorption of water. C. The splenic flexure is the junction of the transverse colon and the descending colon. D. The internal anal sphincter is smooth muscle that surrounds the anus. E. The external anal sphincter is striated muscle that contracts to permit defecation. F. The normal flora of the colon produce vitamins and inhibit the growth of pathogens. G. The stimulus for the defecation reflex is contraction of the sigmoid colon. H. The ileocecal valve prevents backup of feces into the small intestine.

The large intestine is wider in diameter and shorter in length compared to the small intestine. The first part of the large intestine is called the cecum, which includes a small projection called the vermiform appendix. The second part of the large intestine, known as the colon, is responsible for water absorption and the formation of feces. The final part of the large intestine is the rectum, which stores feces until defecation is initiated. The feces are then eliminated from the body through the relaxed muscles of the anus.
