Which of the following is NOT a benefit to bipedalism? Which of the following is NOT a benefit to bipedalism? Frees up hands for gathering food and carrying things Thermoregulation by decreasing the surface area exposed to direct sunlight Allows for traveling longer distances while expending less energy Allows for faster travel than running on four legs

Bipedalism's advantages over quadrupedalism include the ability to transport food more easily, the ability to run faster, reduced burden on the circulatory system, and less exposure to predators.

The thermoregulation hypothesis states that bipedalism evolved to allow hominins to cool down during the hottest hours of the day (around noon). To test this hypothesis, try holding up your palm facing you under the sun around noon to simulate a primate standing on two feet, and notice how much of your hand's surface receives sunlight. Now try holding your palm facing upward (toward the sun) to simulate the back of a primate on a quadruped position, and notice how much of your hand's surface receives sunlight. 1. In which position did your hand receive the least sun exposure? a. palm facing up (quadrupedal) b. palm facing you (bipedal) 2. In which position would a primate be the most exposed to wind and air circulation? a. on all fours (quadrupedal) b. standing on two legs (bipedal)
