Which of the following is NOT a function of sustentacular cells? Absorb sloughed cytoplasm from developing spermatocytes Maintain a blood-testis barrier Secrete testosterone Stimulate spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis
Adi S.
All of the following are correct regarding sustentocytes, except: - provides signals to the cells telling them to live or die - form the blood-testis barrier to prevent activation of the immune system against sperm - help in the regulation of spermiogenesis through the production of androgen binding protein and inhibin - secrete testicular fluid that provides the transport medium for sperm in the lumen
Hormones secrete FSH and LH. FSH stimulates the Sertoli cells to secrete Androgen-Binding Protein. LH stimulates the Leydig cells to secrete testosterone. Testosterone and Androgen-Binding Protein stimulate Sustentacular cells (Sertoli) to secrete inhibin, which inhibits FSH secretion and inhibits sperm production. Testosterone has an antagonistic effect that reduces GnRH. Spermatogenesis. A secondary spermatocyte is 2n. The transformation of spermatids into spermatozoa is called spermiogenesis. The acrosome contains degradative enzymes to penetrate the egg. The midpiece contains many mitochondria to help power the sperm.
