Which of the following is not a target of a sympathetic preganglionic fiber? a. intermural ganglion b. collateral ganglion c. adrenal gland d. chain ganglion
Adi S.
The parasympathetic nervous system is characterized by long postganglionic axons and the absence of preganglionic fibers. Short postganglionic axons innervate organs within the body, while short preganglionic axons are located near the spinal cord. Sympathetic preganglionic axons can synapse with cells in the adrenal cortex, either in the chain or collateral ganglia. They can also synapse in parasympathetic ganglia, tenina ganglia, or the dorsal root ganglion. The celiac, superior mesenteric, and inferior mesenteric ganglia are collateral parasympathetic chain ganglia. Stimulation of the postganglionic cells of the adrenal medulla leads to the release of epinephrine and norepinephrine, as well as cortisol. The vagus nerve carries parasympathetic impulses to the thyroid gland, lacrimal glands, salivary glands, and smooth muscle of the eyes.
