For which exercise condition would the difference between the rate of carbohydrate oxidation and fat oxidation (in grams/min) be greatest? - During exercise at 95% VO2max OR - At the "FATmax" intensity

You are working as exercise physiologist for a company and your job includes tests to measure fat oxidation rate (lipid metabolism) during exercise. One individual, who is on a normal diet, did not follow recommendations for fasting and consumed a high fat meal 1-2 hr prior to testing. The fat oxidation response of the individual during prolonged moderate intensity exercise was 30% higher than normal compared to subjects of same age, sex, exercise capacity, and daily diet. What are possible causes for higher rate of fat oxidation during exercise? Explain the mechanisms involved. Focus on determinants of lipid utilization during exercise
Madhur L.
Athletes burn fat at a maximum rate when they exercise at an intensity near the lactate threshold-the point at which lactic acid starts to build up in the muscles. In addition, athletes who consume the greatest amounts of oxygen during intense exercise $\left[\mathrm{VO}_{2 \mathrm{peak}}\right]$ burn the most fat. Researchers compared the lactate threshold and oxygen consumption of overweight subjects who did not exercise to those of highlytrained athletes. CAN'T COPY THE FIGURE How might an overweight person who does not exercise increase his or her $V O_{2 p e a k}$ and, therefore, his or her lactate threshold?
