An individual is ascending to high altitude over 18,000 ft during a group trek in the Himalayas. The trek is stressful, very cold, and physically demanding. One of the responses during exposure to high altitude is an increase in sympathetic activity. Based on the information provided and your knowledge of physiology, indicate all answers that may apply in this scenario. Select one or more: A lower SaO2 will be detected by peripheral chemoreceptors and breathing rate will be increased to compensate for the decreased environmental PO2. Blood pressure will increase due to increased sympathetic activity, resulting in ANP release and diuresis. An increased ventilatory rate will increase SaO2 in the body but will also increase CO2 exhalation, resulting in a (respiratory) alkalosis. Breathing rate will decrease due to the air containing 20.9% O2 but being 'thinner' at altitude, making it easier to breathe. Parasympathetic activity will also increase under these conditions. Increased sympathetic activity will decrease heart rate and force of contraction as a compensatory mechanism to reduce the workload on the heart at altitude.
