While wading in the ocean, you look down into the water and notice an umbrella-shaped, translucent animal. It swims by pulsing its body, and long tentacles trail behind it. One of them brushes your leg. Ouch! You feel a burning sensation where it touched you. To what phylum does this creature probably belong? Mollusca Cnidaria Porifera Platyhelminthes

PHYLUM MOLLUSCA Organisms in the phylum Mollusca include snails, slugs, octopuses, squids, and oysters, to name a few. They all have a soft body and a muscular foot, which most often is used for movement in some way or another. Using the display specimens and figures, locate the muscular foot of one of the representatives and answer the following questions. Which mollusks have shells? Where does the shell come from? Where do you think organisms like this live? What type of symmetry do these organisms have? What type of skeleton do you find in this phylum? Are these organisms segmented? What type of digestion system do these organisms have? What do you think animals in this group eat?
