James K.
Homo habilis were the first to use tools and it is thought that culture and society might have originated with them. They had larger teeth indicative of an herbivorous diet, and used speech to communicate and cooperate together in groups. Sahelanthropus tchadensis is thought to be the earliest known ancestor of the hominins. They had an ape-like skeleton and were thought to exhibit bipedalism. Ardipithecus species evolved from Australopithecines in Africa around 4 MYA. Although their brain was small and ape-like, their limbs indicate mosaic evolution. Homo erectus had a larger and flatter face, and were significantly taller than previous hominins. H. erectus were the first to use fire and also made use of heavy axes and cleavers.
