1. Why did Lamarck argue for the inheritance of acquired characteristics? Species in the Linnean classifications looked more similar to others in the same family/genus than to species in other families/genera Napoleon's influence- he was forced to argue for it He saw that, if over a great many generations, you altered an organism (e.g. manually pulled back dogs' ears), they eventually produced offspring with the alteration (e.g. dogs born with ears facing back) He was looking for a way to explain how variation would persist in a species and not be eventually "averaged away" over generations

A. Who thought this? Lamarck, Darwin, or both of them? Organisms have changed over time. Organisms changed because they wanted to survive. There was variation in a population. Certain traits helped organisms survive and reproduce better than other organisms without those traits. Organisms can never become extinct. The environment had something to do with why organisms changed. Parents are able to pass on at least some of their traits to their offspring. Parents are only able to pass on traits that they were born with. Organisms could decide to change something about their body and pass on that change to their offspring. Organisms are still changing. B. Evolutionary biologists studied both Lamarck and Darwin's theories very carefully. Darwin's theory has been supported by a lot of evidence. Lamarck's Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics has been disproved. Explain why we should believe Darwin and disprove Lamarck. Draw suitable examples to back your argument.

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck published his theory of evolution in 1809. In his theory, Lamarck proposed that traits like the long neck of a giraffe evolved over time by 'use and disuse'. According to this idea, each giraffe stretched its neck over its lifetime to reach leaves on high branches. The long neck acquired by the giraffe was passed on to its offspring, according to the idea of 'inheritance of acquired characteristics'. This process continued over many, many generations to produce the long necks of giraffes living today. Based on your understanding of natural selection, explain why Lamarck's theory is incorrect, and describe a possible evolutionary process for the lengthening of the giraffe's neck that satisfies the conditions for natural selection.

How did Lamarck's view of evolution differ from Darwin's? Select ALL choices that apply: Lamarck proposed that new forms of primitive organisms were continually being spontaneously generated. Lamarck proposed that all species descended from a common ancestor. Lamarck proposed that life was driven to become inevitably more complex. Lamarck proposed that species could change over time.
