Why is glycogen a good choice as the storage form of glucose for animals? (Check all that apply) By polymerizing sugar molecules, glycogen synthesis prevents liver or muscle cells from absorbing too much water. The β(1-4) glycosidic bonds in glycogen allow for rapid glucose release. The exceedingly high degree of branching in glycogen allows for rapid glucose release. It is possible to regulate the amount of glycogen a tissue maintains by altering the expression of glycogenin.

6. What is the biological importance of storing carbohydrates in the form of glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscles? Why don't we just accumulate free monosaccharides inside the cells? 7. For each molecule below, determine if it is a monosaccharide, a disaccharide, or a polysaccharide: a. Fructose b. Ribose c. Cellulose d. Glucose e. Sucrose f. Glycogen g. Chitin h. Starch i. Maltose

Glycogen is not as reduced as fatty acids are and consequently not as energy rich. Why do animals store any energy as glycogen? Why not convert all excess fuel into fatty acids?
