A person with obesity voluntarily undergoes a carbohydrate diet (fasting) as part of research on amino acid metabolism. After fasting, a blood sample is drawn to analyze the amino acids in the plasma. This is done over a period of 5-6 weeks. In the first week, the concentrations of alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, glutamine, and α-aminobutyrate increased temporarily but then fell below baseline levels. Levels of lysine, leucine, and threonine increase slowly, while the other 13 amino acids eventually decrease. The largest decrease occurred in alanine, which decreased by 70% in the first week. The total concentration of plasma amino nitrogen was reduced by only 1.12%. Problem 3.
