Why are primers needed for DNA replication? They help with the joining of Okazaki fragments. They help direct the placement of the telomeres. DNA polymerase can only add nucleotides to an existing chain. A tiny amount of RNA is needed to tell the cell where genes are located. The primers help with the proofreading function of DNA polymerase.
