why should yog evacuate the vacuum line and cold trap before immersing the cold trap in liquid nitrogen
Added by Julian H.
Step 1
If air/moisture remains, they can condense and freeze when the cold trap is immersed in liquid nitrogen, leading to ice/blockages. Show more…

In order to evacuate the vacuum line you need to open the tap that isolates the vacuum line from the pump and leave it open for a short time until the pressure stabilises at a very low level. This procedure allows the pump to extract almost all of the gas present in the line. What would happen to the liquid in the sample tube if the tap to the sample was opened at the same time as applying the vacuum?

why is it necessary to completely evaporate the dichloromethane before putting the cold finger test tube in place? What would happen if there were liquid present when the sublimation was begun?

Why is it best to cool the crucible and lid (and sample) in a desiccator rather than on the laboratory bench? To minimize the probability of water being adsorbed onto the crucible and lid, as the hot crucible and lid cool moisture from the atmosphere tends to condense on the surfaces. To avoid the burning of the laboratory bench. To cool it fast. To keep the temperature at high level. What need to do with the Mg ribbon before the combination reaction? To be heated up. To be polished. To be washed with water. To be react with acid.
