This is a basic organic chemistry question. You have a dye mixture of methylene blue and disperse red 1. If you want to separate two dye mixtures from each other, what should you do?

1. Why is it important to remove the paper strip from the developing chamber before the solvent front reaches the top edge of the paper? How would the calculation of Rf values be affected if the solvent was allowed to reach the top edge? In this experiment you will practice another technique for separating a mixture into its components. Solvent extraction (also called liquid-liquid extraction) is a method used to separate substances based on their solubility in two immiscible liquids, usually water and an organic solvent. During solvent extraction, one of the solutes migrates from one of the liquid phases to the other liquid phase. The two liquid phases are then physically separated and the solutes isolated. In some solvent extractions, the desired substance migrates from the original liquid phase to the second liquid phase. In other solvent extractions, impurities or undesired substances migrate from the original liquid phase to the second liquid phase, leaving the desired substance in the original liquid phase. The phase that contains the desired substance is called the product layer and the other phase is the waste layer. Why is it important to remove the paper strip from the developing chamber before the solvent front reaches the top edge of the paper? How would the calculation of Rf values be affected if the solvent was allowed to reach the top edge?
