If a cell were to lack a terminal electron acceptor, what would happen? The electron transport chain would stop functioning, including glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. The cell would be unable to run its electron transport chain but would otherwise be unaffected. It would switch to fermentation because fermentation does not involve an electron acceptor. The cell would be unchanged.
