Mycorrhizae are an ecologically important interaction between plant roots and fungus in the soil. The hyphae of fungus in the soil form connections with the roots and root hairs of the plant. The plant absorbs a lot of water from the fungus because the fungus has a much larger surface area in the soil than even the plant's root hairs have. In exchange, the fungus absorbs sugars from the plant that the plant created photosynthetically.
