Your first job is to test the flexibility of one of your hamstring muscle groups (either leg). Lie on your bed and flex your hip with a straight leg (relax your ankle so it can stay somewhat pointed). Estimate the angle up from the horizontal of the bed you are able to flex your hip on your own without your hands or assistance from another person. 1) What anatomical plane and axis of rotation is being used? 2) What muscle(s) are creating hip flexion and with what muscle action? 3) What muscle action/inaction is happening with the hamstring group you are testing? 4) What should the angle of elevation be for the leg for good/normal hamstring flexibility? 5) What would be an angle of elevation that represents potentially dangerous "tight" hamstrings?

1) The anatomic plane being used is the sagittal plane, and the axis of rotation is the transverse axis. Show more…

Using the terms from the key on the right, correctly identify all muscles provided with leader lines in the illustrations below. adductor longus extensor digitorum longus fibularis longus gastrocnemius rectus femoris sartorius soleus tensor fascia lata vastus lateralis vastus medialis Key: 5. posterior compartment muscles that plantar flex the foot (two muscles) 6. adducts the thigh, as when standing at attention 8. extend leg and flex thigh (three muscles) 7. extends the toes 10. Use the key terms in question 9 to respond to the descriptions below. lateral compartment muscles that plantar flex and evert the foot (two muscles) flex the trunk onto the thigh, as in taking a bow (two muscles) Muscles of the Lower Limb 1. tailor's muscle 2.

Each muscle compartment of the thigh contains at least one muscle which functions to flex the knee. Which of the following INCORRECTLY identifies a muscle compartment and muscle which flexes the knee? More than one answer may apply. a. anterior compartment of the thigh - rectus femoris muscle b. anterior compartment of the thigh - sartorius muscle c. posterior compartment of the thigh - semimembranosus muscle d. posterior compartment of the thigh - biceps femoris/short head e. medial compartment of the thigh - adductor longus muscle f. medial compartment of the thigh - gracilis muscle 2. Which of the following muscles of the LEG crosses the knee joint? a. posterior tibialis muscle b. anterior tibialis muscle c. flexor digitorum longus muscle d. soleus muscle e. gastrocnemius muscle
