6. You've just been hired at a brand new biochemical engineering company that produces unicellular organisms with special functions. You've been asked to design a unicellular organism that can move through the moving joints of a machine and excrete oil (lipid) based lubricants. What three cellular structures/organelles should this cell have, and how would they be applicable?

Question: As a recent cell biology graduate, you have just been hired by a biotechnology company to develop a biofuel using algal cells that produce an oil very similar to diesel fuel. What model organism(s) might you use for each of the following aspects of this project? What tools and techniques would you use? Determining which genes and enzymes are required to produce the oil. Fill in the blank: Since the oil is being produced in algal cells, you might try to use ( a ), an ( b ) model organism that is easy to grow in the lab. You could test whether ( c ) produces a similar compound and try to isolate the genes and ( d ) necessary to produce it. Or you could perhaps ( e ) (knock out) genes in your ( f ) cell and see which ones are needed to produce the ( g ). Options to go in the ( ) blanks are: 1. mutagenize 2. Neurospora 3. Rhodopseudomonas 4. fungi 5. biofuel 6. Chlamydomonas 7. enzymes 8. algal 9. bacteria 10. lipids

A New Biofuel. As a recent cell biology graduate, you have just been hired by a biotechnology company to develop a biofuel using algal cells that produce an oil very similar to diesel fuel. What model organism(s) might you use for each of the following aspects of this project? What tools and techniques would you use? (a) Determining which genes and enzymes are required to produce the oil. (b) Producing large amounts of a certain enzyme for further research. (c) Studying whether any of the cellular enzymes interact with each other. (d) Examining the involvement of any cellular organelles in storage or secretion of the oil.

Let’s say that you are a family physician, and you have noticed that during the last few days, many more patients have complained of stomach cramps and intestinal "flu" than you would expect for this time of year. You take samples from these patients and isolate a single-celled organism that has DNA but no visible membrane-bound bodies within its cytoplasm. To which biological domain does this organism probably belong? To which biological domains does this organism probably not belong? Explain your reasoning for each domain. To treat these patients, will you prescribe drugs effective against prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms? Defend your decision to your patient.
