Centripetal Forces - Overview

In physics, a centripetal force is a force that keeps a body in its orbit. A body will travel in a circular path at a constant speed if it is acted upon by a centripetal force directed towards the center of the circle. The centripetal force is directed towards the center of the circle, and its magnitude is equal to the product of the body's mass and the square of its velocity. In the case of circular motion, a body of mass m is moving with a velocity v in a circle of radius r. The direction of the centripetal force is given by the right hand rule. The term "centripetal force" is also used to refer to forces that are required to keep an object in its orbit around a central body, such as the gravitational force that the Sun exerts on the Earth.
