Spherical Lenses - Overview

A lens is an optical device that refracts light or other electromagnetic radiation and directs it in a desired direction. A simple lens consists of a single optical element, while a compound lens consists of several simple lenses (elements), or element(s) made of compound materials, like glass. A lens usually focuses light, but may also divert it, as in a prism or a magnifying glass. A lens is a transmissive optical device that forms an image or focuses light rays by means of refraction. A lens consists of a piece of transparent material, typically ground and polished or coated to impart refractive properties. The lens elements are typically arranged symmetrically to bend the light rays towards the focal point, and to minimize optical aberrations.
