Hello!
My name is Rachel Peterson, I am a 23 year old student living in Lynchburg, Virginia. I have my B.S. in Biomedical Science and am currently pursuing an M.S. in Molecular Medicine. Even as a small child I have always had a passion for the STEM field. Currently, I am looking for a job I can do from home that still allows me to be in the science field. Creating videos on subjects in the field would be perfect for me because I could be teaching others with the same passion, while hopefully also continuing to learn.
(I) How much heat (in joules) is required to raise the temperature of 30.0 $\mathrm{kg}$ of water from $15^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ to $95^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ ?
(I) To what temperature will 7700 $\mathrm{J}$ of heat raise 3.0 $\mathrm{kg}$ of water that is initially at $10.0^{\circ} \mathrm{C} ?$
(II) A British thermal unit (Btu) is a unit of heat in the British system of units. One Btu is defined as the heat needed to raise 1 Ib of water by 1 $\mathrm{F}^{\circ}$ . Show that$$1 \mathrm{Btu}=0.252 \mathrm{kcal}=1055 \mathrm{J} \text { . }$$
(II) A water heater can generate $32,000 \mathrm{kJ} / \mathrm{h}$ . How much water can it heat from $15^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ to $50^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ per hour?
(II) A small immersion heater is rated at 350 $\mathrm{W}$ . Estimate how long it will take to heat a cup of soup (assume this is 250 $\mathrm{mL}$ of water) from $20^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ to $60^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ .
Which of the following represent the process of ACCLIMATION (select all that apply)? Group of answer choicesA plant transplanted to a warmer from a cooler climate develops thicker, waxier coatings on its leaves.Carnivorous species have sharp teeth that allow them to tear flesh and subdue prey.Native Aleutians have barrel-shaped bodies with shorter arms and legs relative to their height to reduce heat loss.Global temperature increases in response to increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels.Humans native to temperate latitudes tan in the summer months when exposure to the sun is greatest.
A wolf pack migrates into your rabbit habitat and eats most of the rabbit population. You return five years after this event and discover that the rabbit population has recovered but that now most of the rabbits look almost the same. Why? Actually, all of these answers could be correct (except of course for the "none of these" answer). Genetic drift resulted from a genetic bottleneck in the rabbit population when most of the rabbits died and only a few survived to give rise to future generations. This greatly decreased the genetic diversity of the rabbits. The rabbits underwent intrasexual sexual selection because most of them were lost to predation by the wolves. The rabbits developed traits to improve how well they could attract mates of the opposite sex. This led to a decrease in genetic diversity of the rabbits which subsequently caused all the rabbits to look the same. The rabbits underwent adaptive radiation because most of them were lost to predation by the wolves. The rabbits evolved and diverged to occupy the niches in the habitat. This led to speciation events such that now you have several different species of rabbits. As it turns out, none of these answers could be correct.
