webs. These patterns mimic the centers of flowers and provide a
lure for flying insects with vision in the ultraviolet range. In
this case, the allele for the UV web pattern is dominant (P).
However, the ability to build ornate webs is also monogenic and a
mutant allele does not facilitate web building behavior. If a
spider possesses two of these mutant alleles (homozygous
recessive), it will not attempt to build a web regardless of the UV
web genotype. Therefore, the gene for UV webs is epistatic to the
web building behavioral gene. Suppose a female and a male
heterozygous for both traits mate yielding 128 offspring (spiders
have a lot of offspring), how many offspring would you guess have
the capability of building webs visible in the UV
spectrum?
