Coding (Non-template) DNA Strand

In DNA, the non-template (or coding) strand has the same sequence as the mRNA, except that thymine (T) is replaced by uracil (U) in RNA. This strand essentially provides the genetic code that is transcribed to produce mRNA, which is then translated into a protein.

Transcription

Transcription is the process by which the information in a DNA sequence is copied into a complementary RNA sequence. For a non-template strand, the resulting mRNA is essentially the same as the coding strand except for the substitution of uracil in place of thymine.

Codons and Reading Frames

The genetic code is read in sets of three nucleotides known as codons. Establishing the correct reading frame, typically starting at a start codon, is crucial to accurately translating the mRNA into the corresponding sequence of amino acids.

Genetic Code and Translation

The genetic code assigns specific amino acids to each codon. During translation, ribosomes interpret the mRNA codons in sequence and match each codon with its corresponding amino acid, thereby synthesizing a protein based on the genetic instructions encoded in the mRNA.
