Hey, what's up guys, it's eric, and today we're going to be finding the distance between detroit and atlanta in nautical miles.
00:08
Now, we're assuming these two cities are directly on top of each other in terms of longitude, has the same longitude measurement.
00:16
And so all we need to do to figure out the distance between the two is to figure out the difference in latitude and then multiply that by our conversion factor, which i will highlight later on in the video.
00:27
So let's go started.
00:28
What are the latitude measurements for detroit and atlanta? well, since they give it to us in dms system, the degrees minute, second system, and we need to convert it through using the straight up degrees with no minutes or seconds.
00:45
We need to convert this dms into a measurement in degrees.
00:49
So how do we do this? well, first we're going to split up 42 degrees and 20 minutes into 42 degrees and 20 minutes.
00:56
Then we're going to apply our conversion factor knowing that for every one degree of latitude, there is 60 minutes of latitude.
01:05
So, in doing so, we cancel out the minutes unit here, one in the numerator, one in the denominator, and then multiply it by the degrees unit.
01:14
So all we're left with is the unit degrees.
01:18
And multiplying through, we get ourselves 0 .33 degrees latitude for this component, this term here, and put it together...
