DDT Affects Neurons The pesticide DDT $\left(\mathrm{C}_{14} \mathrm{H}_{9} \mathrm{Cl}_{5}\right)$ kills insects such as malaria-carrying mosquitoes by opening sodium ion channels in neurons, causing them to fire spontaneously, which leads to spasms and eventual death.
