Critical Mass

Critical mass refers to the minimum amount of fissile material needed to maintain a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. When a system has reached this threshold, the neutrons released in each fission event cause enough additional nuclei to fission, leading to a continuous and self-propagating reaction.

Nuclear Chain Reaction

A nuclear chain reaction is a process where neutrons produced by nuclear fission events induce further fission events in a material. This process can be self-sustaining when the system's mass is at or above the critical mass level, meaning each fission event triggers at least one more event on average.
