In this video, we're going to discuss how to write the electron configuration for a transition metal cat -ion, so in general terms.

So we have the transition metals here in the d block.

And so if you take any one of them, then you'd have to go to the previous noble gas, and then you're going to write the remaining electrons on top of that noble gas.

And the way you do that is you're going to remove the s electrons right before, and then the d electrons will be left unless you remove those as well.

So the s electrons leave before the d electrons.

When we're filling the energy levels, d fills before s for a certain sub shell.

But when we're removing electrons, we remove the valence shell first.
