Gas Properties

Gases are characterized by having neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume; they expand to fill their containers. They are compressible, exhibit low densities compared to solids and liquids, and have measurable properties such as pressure, volume, and temperature. These properties arise due to the large distances between particles, which means that the particles are in constant, rapid movement and interact primarily through collisions rather than attractive forces.

Kinetic Molecular Theory

Kinetic molecular theory explains gas behavior by modeling gases as a collection of tiny particles in constant, random motion. It predicts that gas pressure results from the collisions of these particles with the walls of their container, that the particles themselves occupy negligible volume compared to the container, and that collisions are perfectly elastic. Temperature is directly related to the average kinetic energy of the gas particles, thereby linking microscopic molecular motion to macroscopic properties such as pressure and temperature.
