We're going to start considering how we get ions and how ions are formed.
00:05
And the answer to that is an ion is formed when an atom either gains or loses electrons, thus changing the charge on that atom.
00:14
And when we're deciding whether or not the atom is gaining or is losing electrons, what we need to ask is, are we getting or is the atom becoming more or less negative? if the ion is more negative than it was at the beginning, thus we're getting more negative, that means we gained electrons.
00:47
Because electrons are negative, and more of them, gaining more of them, makes the ion more negative.
00:54
Going the opposite direction, if we are less negative than when we started, another way to say that is if the positive charge is greater, we have a more positive charge than when we started, that means we lost electrons because those negative charges are leaving and making the ion more positive.
01:14
Let's go through a few examples here.
01:16
First of all, we have aluminum going to aluminum 3 plus.
01:21
Aluminum 3 plus here is less negative than when we started.
01:25
So that means we lost electrons.
01:28
And since the charge changed by 3, we lost 3 electrons...
