All right, so in this question, we're asked to either support or refute the argument that life on earth is thanks to bacteria or that we owe our lives to bacteria.
00:15
So i've laid out some points in support of that argument.
00:19
So the first point is that there are photoautotrophic bacteria at the base of some food chains.
00:25
So many organisms rely on those photoautotrophic bacteria for a food source.
00:31
So without those bacteria, they would not be alive.
00:35
Another benefit of photootrophic bacteria is that they are able to release oxygen into the atmosphere.
00:42
And as you know, oxygen is a terminal electron acceptor used in oxidative phosphorylation of metabolism.
00:49
So complex life forms such as humans would not be able to have evolved without the presence of bacteria.
00:55
So in that sense, we do owe our lives to bacteria.
00:58
The second point is that there are chemo -otrophic bacteria that cycle nitrogen and other inorganic compounds like sulfur through our ecosystem.
01:08
So many organisms, including humans, need nitrogen -containing compounds, as well as sulfur compounds, which are used to make proteins, nucleic acids, and other molecules to form the building blocks of life.
01:24
So without these building blocks, we would not have seen such great biodiversity on planet earth.
01:30
The third point is that humans and many other animals have bacteria living inside of them...
