Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks form from the accumulation, compaction, and lithification of sediments which can be fragments of pre-existing rocks, precipitated minerals, or organic materials. They record information about past environments and geological processes including weathering, erosion, and biological activity.
Clastic Sedimentary Rocks
Clastic sedimentary rocks are composed of discrete grains or fragments derived from the mechanical weathering and erosion of older rocks. Their classification depends on characteristics such as grain size, composition, and sorting, with common examples including conglomerate, sandstone, and shale.
Chemical Sedimentary Rocks
Chemical sedimentary rocks form by the precipitation of minerals from solution, often through evaporation or chemical reactions in the water. This group includes rocks such as certain limestones, dolostones, and cherts which can display unique crystalline textures.
Organic Sedimentary Rocks
Organic sedimentary rocks are composed primarily of the remains of plants and animals. These rocks, such as coal, form in environments where organic material accumulates faster than it decays, preserving biological evidence of past ecosystems.
