Okay, so this question is very intriguing, thinking about altruistic behavior in animals.

And altruistic behavior is interesting in itself because there's a little bit of a catch here.

Okay, so just generally speaking, altruistic behavior is when one organism helps another organism at a cost to themselves.

In other words, they're putting themselves at risk to help another organism survive.

So this happens a lot.

An example would be, let's say we have squirrels that call out to indicate that there's a predator or some sort of danger to the others in the population.

What they're doing is they're putting themselves at risk by screaming out because if predator would see them easier and hear them, but they're warning all the other ones in the population to run and hide.

But here's the catch.

This normally only works and only happens when the organism that's being helped can pass on the genetics of the organism putting themselves at risk.
