Molecular orbital theory describes how atomic orbitals of individual atoms combine to form molecular orbitals that extend over the entire molecule. These molecular orbitals can be bonding, antibonding, or nonbonding, and the distribution of electrons among them is used to predict molecular properties such as bond order, bond length, and magnetic behavior.

Orbital Energy Ordering

The relative energies of molecular orbitals, especially those arising from the 2p atomic orbitals, significantly influence how electrons are distributed in a molecule. In diatomic molecules there is a subtle switch in ordering—lighter species tend to have the ? orbitals below the ? orbital, whereas heavier species exhibit the reverse.
