Ozone Layer

This absorption process is crucial for maintaining life on the planet by limiting the exposure to harmful UV radiation.

Ozone Depletion

Ozone depletion refers to the reduction of ozone in the stratosphere, which undermines the protective barrier against UV radiation. The process is primarily accelerated by human-made chemicals, notably chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and related halogenated compounds. These substances release chlorine and bromine when they reach the stratosphere, which then catalytically destroy ozone molecules, leading to thinner ozone layers and increased UV exposure on Earth's surface.
