Photoperiodism

Photoperiodism is the biological response to the changes in day length that organisms use to time seasonal events such as reproduction, migration, and hibernation. It involves the integration of light signals over extended periods to trigger physiological and behavioral adaptations.

Retinal Photoreceptors

In many mammals, light detection for regulating daily and seasonal rhythms occurs primarily in the retina. These photoreceptors, including specialized cells like intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, capture light information and help synchronize internal circadian clocks to the external light-dark cycle.

Deep Brain Photoreceptors

In contrast to mammals, certain non-mammalian vertebrates such as birds and lizards have photoreceptors located within the brain itself. These deep brain photoreceptors allow these animals to directly monitor day length, bypassing the eyes, and contribute to the regulation of seasonal processes through neural pathways integrated within the brain.
